Chromatography & Capillary Electrophoresis Lab.

The Chromatography & Capillary Electrophoresis Lab. is equipped with modern instrumentation for the implementation of analytical separation methods, including gas chromatography (GC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), capillary electrophoresis (CE) and gas chromatography hyphenated to mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Most of our work is related with the application of analytical methodologies for the characterization of chemicals and for sensitive and selective determination of solutes in various (complex) matrices. Due to the great analytical challenges usually involved in many systems, we are continuously searching for new technologies, by testing, evaluating and comparing with conventional separation methods.

We have large experience on modern “sample preparation” approaches prior to  chromatographic analysis, particularly the application of sorption-based technologies such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and bar adsorptive microextraction (BAμE), in many important scientific areas.

On the other hand, we have been strongly involved in the analytical training too, particularly of undergraduate and graduate students but also of senior researchers, to get experience in theoretical and practical (“hands-on”) issues related with analytical separations.

In short, our mission is to transfer chromatographic and mass spectrometric knowledge, know-how and analytical solutions in a broad range of application areas, such as (bio)chemistry, petro-chemistry, forensic, food, flavours and natural products, pharmaceutical sciences, toxicology, environmental chemistry and life sciences.
